Question about

My MacBook Pro won't boot up. The power LED on the front comes on and I can hear the fans.

The computer even gets warm but there is no startup chime and the screen never turns on. This happens with or without being plugged in and with or without a battery inserted. I also tried to boot from a DVD to no avail.

Needless to say I'm pissed as I have replaced the SuperDrive, the power adapter, and the battery. This time it seems more serious. I'll probably go with an HP Envy with an SSD next time...no moving parts.

After resetting the PRAM and trying all sorts of other tips and tricks, I ended up getting the logic board replaced at the Apple Store. That means no part of this computer is original except the HDD and the screen. I have never had this much trouble with a machine. At least I bought AppleCare so the repairs were free. I just can't believe it was necessary.

Its actually not the entire MoBo. Its just the GPU. This problem is getting WAY too common for all maufacturers , because they're using cheap soldering iron mixed with lead (which loses grip easily)... so, the GPU (graphics card) heats up (as it should), and un-solders. Hence, the machine won't boot.

There's a couple of solutions, but the "official" one (the one Apple, or HP, or Sony, or whoever manufactured the computer will say) is that you have to replace the MoBo. Although the real problem is just the GPU.

You could resolder the GPU by a process known as REBALLING. Reballing essentially means you'll reheat the GPU and resolder it to the MoBo.

The secondary problem is that laptops are paying less attention to dispersing the heat generated by the CPU and GPU. Especially Apple... in their attempt at making their computers even more attractive, they don't add enough vents to the machines case.

So sorry to hear you had to live through this man, It really sucks.

Oh, man! That totally sucks!

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? It's not always a silver bullet, but sometimes it's gotten my computer back in working order.

That really sucks. You try seeing if it comes up as an external drive?
