My Macbook Air uses a lower resolution when using my external Display?

I used to have a MacBook Pro, and I would connect it to an external display (Samsung SyncMaster SA300) and I don't remember what resolution the output was (I can find out) but now on my MacBook Air it definitely looks to be a lower resolution and I want to find out why and how I can fix it. Do I need a driver or what?

This may be due to how you are connecting the two together. If you are using DVI or HDMI the max resolution should be about 1900x1200 or 1920x1080p. I'm not sure what the maximum resolution or size of your particular monitor is. You may need a Mini-Displayport to Dual-Link DVI active adapter or some other method to connect your monitor at full resolution. What are the display input options on your monitor and how are you connecting it currently?
