My 2010 Macbook Pro overheats and shuts down constantly - does anyone else have this problem?

Anyone have an ideas what is going on here? I took it in to the Apple store and they said it "was probably a software problem" and reinstalled the operating system - but that hasn't fixed the problem. What happens is this: my mac starts to become very hot, I can hear the fan whirring at top speed, and then the screen just goes black. I then have to restart the machine and get an error message that the laptop had a "kernel panic". This used to happen about once a day, but now happens so frequently (every 30 minutes or so) that I can't even use the machine. Any have any ideas about this?

Sounds like a problem with the video card, you should bring it back to the Apple Store and have them take a look at it.

My best guesses would be that the vents have become clogged with dust, and is no longer able to expel heat efficiently enough to cool off the CPU, or the thermal paste between the heat sink and CPU or GPU is no longer effectively transferring heat and may need to be reapplied. If you feel comfortable with opening your MBP take a look at ifixit.com. They have excellent detailed walk-throughs on MBP tear downs, and a great tutorial for applying thermal paste so that it is very effective. If you do decide to re-apply thermal paste, i recommend "Artic Silver", I've used it on my MBP, and most recently on my PS3.
