Modem compatibility

Ok so I picked this up, first with a ZTE brand modem only to find that it is not compatible with the router. This was mentioned in the user manual, not on the outside packaging. Of course the helpful troll behind the counter said the modem was compatible.
So, the manual states, that you need a 3 branded (UK) Huawei modem. Ok, I says, and goes to get one. Picked up an E1550. Now I'm still in the air on this one since it is a PAYG sim and is at least detected by the router. But this is all it is. It is detected, the Mode light comes on, the LED on the modem goes blue, then all off.
All LEDs on the router and modem reset. This loops forever and after various config changes in the router software, the same keeps happening. Without a sim, the same, so I am guessing that all of these people are liars.
The Huawei website is as useful as a frisbee toothpick. 3 want to charge me to call them and I am not guaranteed a direct answer, otherwise it would be on their website.
Other sites, from googling, show that it might only work with three *specific* Huawei modems. These are the E220, E160G, and the E169G I believe. These are at least proven to work by owners.
So I've ordered an E160G off ebay and will keep my fingers crossed but unless I'm doing something wrong, I'd say both the OEM and Carrier suppliers are not accurate and misleading.

On a good note, it seems that the router is not locked to 3 and can be configured with other carrier sims (provided you can get the right modem!)
