Mechanical (Clicky) Keyboard Recommendations

Lately, I am a little obsessed with finding a "clicky" style keyboard, Something that gives me good feedback (physical and audible) while typing. I never really knew what they were called but I guess they are called mechanical keyboards. Well since I didn't even know what they are called then I guess it's pretty obvious that I would not know which are the best ones. Anyone have any recommendations?

If you're looking for something that will give you a nice click, I suggest a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Blue or Brown switches.

The Das Keyboard is a good choice for a nice simple mechanical keyboard (Blues on the Professional and Ultimate Cherry, Browns on the Silent (which is still pretty loud)

The Razer BlackWidow and BlackWidow Ultimate keyboards are better for gaming and thus have a ton of fancy features and backlighting (on the Ultimate).

On a separate note, the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard is a very popular model for it's great typing feedback. This has slimkey caps however, and may not suit your tastes but I find its tactile feel to be quite good.

I, and many others, lean heavily toward calling the Apple Extended II (gdgt.com/apple/extended-keyboard/ii/) the greatest keyboard of all time. I have a supply of them at home that I have hoarded and I use the iMate ADB to USB adapter to connect it. I have tried other mechanical keyboards, including some old IBMs we still had around here at work, but I have never found another that has the same feel. If you are a writer, there is nothing quite like the feeling of slamming the space bar on this bad boy with your thumb. Perhaps those of us who are of the Aspberger's personality type just like mechanical response more than "normal" people, but this keyboard gives a truly cathartic feeling while typing. The day my iMate dies is going to be a day of tears. I should have enough of the keyboards laying around to get me through to the apocalypse, though.

I like Microsoft's Natural curved ergonomic keyboards. I had an original Elite that I finally wore out after 12 years of extended writing. The newer one isn't as 'clicky' as the older one is, but it still has a decent tactile response. I still have the keyboard from my old 486- that thing was built like a tank.

I currently own the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Mechanical Keyboard (gdgt.com/razer/blackwidow/ultimate/). It is the BEST keyboard I have ever used and I have become absolutely addicted to the clicking noise.

However, Razer recently introduced a new model, the Razer BlackWidow Stealth which has slightly quieter keys and a matte finish (that's the big plus here) that I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a mechanical keyboard. (gdgt.com/razer/blackwidow/stealth/)

It can be purchased here: store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/produc...

Good luck!

Since you use a Mac, the Matias Tactile Pro 3 is probably a good bet.

Check out that overclock.net link in the first reply for more info than you ever wanted to know about high-end keyboards. There is really no other option than cherry for the best of the best, but for that you will be paying for it.
