Making calls with Google Voice on an iPod touch?

I know Google Voice doesn't allow for VoIP calls, but is there some kind of workaround that would allow you to make calls with an iPod touch? What about a Skype Out account?

Has anyone has success with this?

Skype and SkypeOut works perfectly on iPod touch and other iOS devices. Facetime is also a decent alternative (just put some tape over the camera?). Is Gizmo5 still around? That might be worth checking out, too.

Talkatone lets you make VoIP calls using Goole Voice over the iPhone/iPod.

And as a related question, why doesn't the Google Voice app do this? Does it? If I remember correctly, you can only make outgoing calls and not receive incoming calls.

Yea as already answered Talkatone seems like the best workaround for making calls on an ipod Touch. It also works over 3G if your using an iphone.

SkypeOut works perfect on the iPod Touch. Talkatone let's you make VoIP calls with your Google account. netTalk also lets you make VoIP calls.

Viber has the best quality VoIP calls, but you can only call other Viber users.

I got 8x8 voip for the office a long time ago and it works great. They have an app that works on the ipod touch to make and receive calls. It works just like an existing extension and uses the same phone number. It works wonderfully if you already have 8x8 service. I also use talkatone with my gvoice number. So I actually have a 2 line ipod. I've actually had them both ring at the same time.

I agree with all the other answers provided, but personally I use Textfree v3.6.2 by Pinger. I dial into my Google Voice account from it and place my calls that way. It started as an SMS app, but they added VOIP service and I find the quality comparable to Skype.

Update: since I was checking my apps while I typed this answer, I got an update from Textfree; There is now Textfree with Voice v4.3.1. Just tried it and it works just as well as my previous version. Also, I find the rate on minutes to be VERY competitive!

Yes. All you have to do is install skype and use the headphones with a mic. All u would need is a wifi connection. Skype Out also works.

Line2 is decent as well. They give you yet another number but works well on Wifi, and you can make and receive calls.

I use sipgate on my iPhone (w/o service). Kind of weird having an SF number, but Google Voice solves that. And, it works well...I've used it to call my mother in Canada. And, earlier this year when I had to send a fax (can't remember the time before that where I did one.)....sipgate worked.

Ditto what ryan (a.k.a, I built the site so I get dibs on Veronica's questions, plus I have an "inside scoop" on when they will be asked) block said, Skype works great on the iPod Touch. The one caveat is that since wifi drains the battery ridiculously fast, you'll have to be ready to charge it or have one of those external battery packs ready to go.

I use Textfree v4.3.1 Works great. Google Voice on my VZ iPhone great too, but wish it worked on wifi, also. @xenzirril has a good idea - I forward my LL# to GV# then fwd to my cell to block sales calls forever & record calls by pressing 4.

The Talkatone app works as the medium for incoming and outgoing calls, however the interface and functionality of the app leaves much to be desired. Personally I use GV Mobile + as a gateway to the Talkatone app. It has a great streamlined interface for sms and calls made through GV Mobile + are directed to the Talkatone app. GV Connect can also be used in this capacity. Either app works perfectly in connection with Talkatone to turn your iPod into a iPhone, however I strongly recommend GV Mobile +.

In the past I had some success using fring with my iPod Touch. Using a pair of miked headphones I was able to connect to Skype with my fring app and make and receive calls. Skype however blocked access to fring some time ago, so since then I have not been able to make this work.
