I previously owned a 40GB ps3 and it was nearly silent. I switched over to a slim around release because i liked the new form factor, and sold my old one to a friend.
The thing is that the PS3 is WAY louder than my old 40gb ps3. is there any way to fix it? I tried doing a fan test a few times to blow out excess dust but its not even that old and I cant see dust being a problem yet. If anyone knows of a solution i'd be quite jazzed.
Question about
Loud Fan Noise
I have the same problem, thou I kept my old one as well. even at Idle, its loud. w/ my setup, its not noticeable unless the audio is muted, but I know its still there.... I have plenty of clearance on all sides (except the bottom, of course) and its still loud... so much so that I've nicknamed it the Harrier.

I currently have an 80gb PS3 (not Slim). About six months ago, my fan started making loud fan noises. Tried the dusting methods explained on several sites and nothing worked. It was so bad, in fact, I was thinking of selling it used and buying a new Slim, since it seemed like it was better all around. Man, am I glad I didn't do that after reading these posts. Seems like Sony still hasn't worked out the kinks with the fan yet.
Anyways, got really pissed off about a month ago because I kept on having to turn up the volume on my sound system just to hear the Blu-ray I was watching over the darn fan, so I finally called it in to Sony. They took it in under warranty, and sent me an exchange unit (looks brand new but it's probably a refurb) only 5 business days after I received the special shipping box in the mail. Pretty darn easy and now my PS3 is dead quiet.
My advice is to go ahead and send it in! You shouldn't have to put up with a crazy loud system.
