iTunes uses a proprietary protocol to share to other Apple Hardware within the "walled garden". Devices like the 360, PS3, Boxee, WD TV, etc use uPnP. There are Mac apps that take iTunes and stream over uPnP so it can be receivable by non-Apple devices. Playback is one such app, but it is commercial software that costs $15.

If you are considering buying new hardware, you'll have to weigh your options between staying within the walled garden and buying a AppleTV or straying outside with a 3rd party device and potentially dealing with minor issues, but you'll have the advantage of all the other features AppleTV does not support. To be honest, I would recommend an AppleTV for the Mac user that wants to stream to their TV but if you have an extensive non-Mac standard media and/or a preference of the WD TV apps, then the use case for the WD TV is more attractive.
