Pics and specs on here are for the old bionic hardware that was never released. When are we going to be able to access and edit specs again here on gdgt? Come on Ryan and Pete... the wiki style product database was what made gdgt unique and useful. Now its basically just another elaborate discussion board site with stale data.

If you want to add products to the database, they are currently testing this feature for re-release, so stay tuned. You can also request to be added to the beta testing team by replying to Ryan's post in the feedback area:

And it was just announced today that the feature is open to all users! Here is Dave's post:

First off, I've updated the page with the proper image.

Second, the team works hard to create a great product for all people to use. We're concentrating on great Q&A and specs will be back shortly.

Lastly, if you want to be critical, which is fine, try providing constructive feedback instead of outright hate.

Just wanted to add, as for the the specs pages and user contributions, we're currently working our butts off to get these out. Believe me, we want these features out just as much as you do, but there's only so much time in a day and our awesome developers need to sleep every now and then. I can assure you that these features will be rolling out soon and they'll be even better than before.

What kills me though is that there was a very useful and functional specs system initially. It was abruptly taken away and all we've heard for months since then is how hard you're working and that its coming soon. None of the excuses would be necessary if the previously functional system wasn't taken from us. I would have uploaded appropriate pictures myself and adjusted specs and descriptions myself. We'd all be happy and the site would be useful again.

Hah, I understand where you're coming from. Believe me, I want specs online ASAP too. But the system wasn't functional from a backend perspective and it really limited us in what we were capable of doing. That's why we took it offline to make changes.

Unfortunately for users, what we we're doing (from the engineering side of things) is pretty complex and taking a long time to get online. But once it's fully functional, we'll be able to do a number of awesome things that just were not possible in the initial iteration of gdgt. I get your frustration and your critique is valid. But we're working hard right now. I know it's cliche to say, "they'll be back soon!" but we don't mean to sound dismissive. They'll literally be back as soon as possible! There's no set timeline other than when-it's-finally-done.

But we're getting close.

As for updating products and such, at the moment, if you find out something needs to be updated, let us know in gdgt.com/feedback/ since we're more likely to see it there and it's easier for us to monitor.

First of all, this should be posted in the feedback section. You can tell because you didn't even ask a question. You can find the feedback section linked at the bottom of every page.

Secondly, the gdgt team has been hard at work to bring a better user experience to its consumers and, as a part of that, specs will be returning soon. Add to database is currently being tested, and there have been many improvements to the gdgt systems recently. Remember that only staff and moderators (right now) are responsible for maintaining every single product page on the entire website.

In the future, please try to post constructively. Insulting the site content is not productive in the least.

If we're going to have inaccurate and outdated data, why not throw some in slightly off topic comments to match? Realistcly though, my comments are just as relevant as those picture on this page.

Saying they are hard at work doesn't excuse the fact that the last big product improvements they were hard at work on were what got us into this discussion. Regular members used to be able to fix these problems and keep things up to date. Now that they've taken that from us, the site is becoming less useful. They've been telling people the product specs system is coming back "soon" for months now.

The content providers of the site provides the reason for the site to be, and the basis of the monetiseable component of the site. A lot of time was invested by the users in providing the content and many users did so on the basis of the way the site initially worked.

Various key components of the site has at one time or another, frankly, been broken for way too long.

Sticking a 'beta' on the title no longer absolves (to use a strong word) that kind of approach to a user-generated content site - you can't borrow from 'plaster beta everywhere' and actually release a truly beta-y beta anymore.

There's also a rather defensive attitude in this thread which does not bode well for the future in terms of a user-centric aspect.

Honestly, I wouldn't sweat it too much, it's not like we've written it off. The user editable portions of the product database will be back very soon. The only reason they aren't presently on the site is because we had to completely restructure the way specs data and user contributions are stored and used so we could finally make good on many of the feature requests and issues we had in the old site. In other words, I'm not any more excited about their being offline than you guys are.

As I've said in the past, the product specs (and user editable database) system is by a huge margin the most complicated part of gdgt. We're making steps (including putting our new and massively improved add products to database tool back into production this week). Stuff this complex takes time, and even as we speak the team is working like hell to bring these features online. Stay tuned, more soon!

Ryan's beta testing thread is closed and no longer accepting replies. Good to see some progress happening today with adds being available. Obviously, I'm really looking forward to "edits" coming back too.
