I've had this happen with other Android phones. You should try deleting all Gmail data (go into Applications via Settings) and then reboot. Should start syncing again.

i tried going into accounts and deleting the gmail account, but it said that i would have to reset to "factory settings" which i don't want to do after adding apps and personalizing the homepages, etc. over the last few days.
i went into applications, through settings, and then manage applications, but gmail did not come up as an option there.
thoughts?
forgive me for being new to android.

You have to set the filter to "All" in Manage Applications. It's in the menu.

tried it and it didn't seem to do the trick. does having "advanced task killer" have anything to do with the problem?

That shouldn't be a factor. Are you sure you cleared data for both Gmail and Gmail storage? What happens when you reboot and open Gmail?

It may be if you have Advanced Task Killer automatically killing the Gtalk service. Though you'd think that the gtalk background service has something to do with Google Talk, and that you do not need it if you do not use Google Talk, I understand that this is used by Android 2.1 to communicate with Google services like the market, mail, etc.

I would think that ATK would automatically whitelist the gtalk service, but perhaps it does not.

Honestly, I think that task killer apps are more trouble than they are worth.

So i went in to applications and click "clear data" for both gmail and gmail storage and there was no change. I also restarted the phone.
I noticed that after clearing the data, gmail did not sync on its own. i had to go into accounts and click on sync now in order to get all the gmail/gtalk, etc. running again. to me this probably means that for some reason the push or auto-sync is not running....
