Is your ipad smart cover not holding on as well as it used to?

my smartcovers--I have two--aren't holding onto the back of my ipad 2 the way they used to. I'm not talking about the hinge, I'm talking about the flap that used to stay pinned to the rear of the ipad when folded back. Maybe I'm imagining this, but I see a support thread at apple.com where a few people swear the same thing. It's not the individual smart cover, mind you, I have two. But I can't imagine how this is happening otherwise. Could the magnets be naturally weakening after the first batch? Could it be my iPad? I don't hear anything bumping around in there.

There are no magnets on the back of the iPad to hold the cover in the folded back position. The magnets that hold it in the closed position do have an effect on the cover when it is folded back, but the folded back cover's edge is not tight to the curved side of the iPad, thus the magnetic pull is very weak.

Magnets naturally grow weaker after suffering shock, i.e. hard hits or falls; the domains of electrons inside the magnet that should be aligned get jumbled up when you hit it, weakening the attractive force.
SOLUTION:
To fix this problem, simply take a stronger magnet (rare earth magnet, electromagnet, etc.) and rub it along the cover's magnetic strip in one direction 10 or so times and it will hold like new.

Have definitely noticed same.

I have the exact same problem after 3-4 weeks of use..It is very annoying and have definitely gotten worse over the last couple of weeks. If I fold it outwards, instead of inwards it seems to hold a little better, but it is still far from useable anymore.
What is Apples return policy on this?

I haven't had any issues with mine, and it's been through quite a bit of use, including some not so gentle handling by a curious toddler (he managed to get at it while I stepped away). I received it in early April shortly before my iPad 2. But I also have the leather-covered PRODUCT (RED) smart cover, which may be a little sturdier or simply designed a bit differently.

I have the same issue. To a point I value that the magnets have gotten weaker. When I first attached the smart cover, very rarely, the magnets would trigger the lock screen when laying flat against the back of the device.

I haven't had any serious issue with this. The cover has never held to the back of the iPad particularly well as I don't believe it was designed for that purpose as lepton points out. I usually hold mine in my right hand, holding the cover back while doing so, or I simply remove it. The magnetic hold doesn't seem to be weaker, in any of my use contexts anyway, since I purchased mine on launch day.

I was just thinking this same thing for the last few days. At first I thought it was all in my head. I actually wonder if it's not magnets itself losing strength (which would only really happen if dropped a lot, and I assure you that hasn't happened) but maybe the polyurethane material that is weaker with repeated use and wear. this could be a possible cause of the smart cover's seemingly loss of strength

I also have the red leather smart cover. What a waste of my money. It stains quite easily and looks quite old after only a few weeks of use.

So yes, I have found the same issue as you describe here. I purchased a green smart cover which at first gave a better experience, but now has weakened too.
