Question about

Is this GPU really the PowerVR SGX540?

That's a 20 month old GPU that's the same as the one in the Nexus S. That would be very disappointing for a "flagship" device!

The SGX 540 in the OMAP 4460 is running at 384 MHz which is almost twice as fast as in the Galaxy S. It's certainly not going to compete with the Mali-400 or the SGX 544MP2 (SGSII and iPhone 4S, respectively) but it is still going to be the next fastest GPU in a cell phone today. www.anandtech.com/show/4413/ti-announces-omap-4470...

Agggh couldn't resist adding my own two cent in to this discussion :)
Its a dam shame about the gpu, but I really don't think this means performance will be 'poor', but just not up to the latest gen gpus. I have an Asus transformer which has a Tegra 2 gpu clocked at 333Mhz which gives about 5.33 GFLOPS on a 1280 x 800 screen. All android powered games look amazing on this and it plays 720 video well.

SGX 540 in the OMAP 4460 is running at 384 MHz. At 200Mhz it gives 3.2 GFLOPS so at 384Mhz it should be giving you about 6.1 GFLOPS! Thats better than the Tegra 2 and over 2x the performance of the original iPhone 4!

But as these GL benchmarks show, it now way near the SII performance. I think this translates to it playing all current gen games exceptionally well, but not being as future proof as the sII if ur are a hardcore mobile gamer. That being said this still has 6x the performnce for my HTC desire which I can finally upgrade this, so I'm not gonna complain =P

That does look to be the case according to the spec sheet on TIMN (thisismynext.com/2011/10/18/galaxy-nexus-iphone-4s...). I guess we're just going to have to hope that that 1.2 GHz processor picks up the slack.

Although it's the same chip it has been clocked to a higher frequency.
But it a indicator that they had to keep the price down and margins a little higher.

If you play a lot of 3D games, I would be wary of buying the GN. There are 2.4x as many pixels for the PowerVR SGX540 in the 1280x720 GN to drive than on 800x480 OMAP (various) devices or Hummingbird (Galaxy S, Nexus S) devices.

A native 1280x720 3D game probably isn't going to be pleasant with a SGX540.

That's why I say a GSII is a better buy than a GN. They should have went with an Exynos for the GN.

youre totally mistaken about the GPUs. actually, The Mali 400 and the SGX540 are almost evenly matched. We better not forget ICS is optimized for OMAP 4460 just like honeycomb was optimized for Tegra 2
