Question about
ArkHunter

Is this a good tablet for drawing?

I've heard they have driver issues that may or may not ever be fixed, such as the pen pressure doesn't work with most drawing/painting programs. (Photoshop, Painter, etc.) I would totally buy this if that weren't the case.

Any digital artists/designers use this for drawing? All the other tablets are kind of out of my price range and have even crappier graphics chips than this does, so that's why I like this one.

Short answer, No.

Long answer. I have used a few of these and the screen on all of them have been nothing short of horrible. They are hard to see, extremely grainy, and yet somehow manage to be very reflective. The touchscreen it'self has ZERO different levels of pressure, you are either selecting/drawing something or you aren't. It's only good to jot yourself a few quick notes and maybe the occasional windows media center usage.

I have the tx2500, and I use it for drawing (although I'm no artist, but a simple grade 12 high school student). The tx2500 has pen pressure for Photoshop (CS4), AutoDesk SketchBook Pro, and other drawing programs. Now I haven't tried the tx2, but I would assume that it would have the same features as its earlier models. Now as for the screen, the tx2500 has a terrible glare, but the tx2 seems to be a major improvement. Also, what OS do you have? I know when I first got the Windows 7 RTM and whatnot, I had trouble with finding some proper drivers, but I did get the eventually (with help from the HP site).

Be aware the Tx2 series digitizer is made by n-trig, as the other tx models are made by wacom including the tx2500.

I have a tx2z 1000 CTO, I was stupid in assuming that the tx2 would come with a wacom digitizer like all the others, and did not really notice any issues (minus photoshop problems) that make this a bad machine. The digitizer is really accurate, the touchscreen is very fast and smooth with windows 7 and some tweaks to the settings.

The problem I have is with the pen that comes with the machines. It seems to be really poorly made, there is a rubber washer at the end of the pen that provides the springy feeling you get when you push the tip of the pen down. This washer seems to wear out rather fast, and then allows the tip to go to far inside the pen, causing it to have calibration problems and skipping across the screen. I have a wacom tablet for my desktop and I can say that the digitizer on the tx2 itself seems really nice, just as accurate as the wacoms. But the pen is terrible. No eraser on the pen either.

If you want any real multi touch features, you need to use the windows 7 and the drivers made for 7, which are not complete, and is missing things that the vista drivers have in them, like auto, dual, and other such things, the auto mode is missing. If you want photoshop with this machine, forget pressure sensitivity, n-trig does not want to fix it, and neither does adobe.

I have had this machine for almost 6 months, the display is sharp and has good color, it has a semi gloss like most digitizers do, and the speckles that most people complain about do not bother me after a few days of use. Heat is not much of an issue with windows 7 and a bit of arctic silver. If you want the thing for drawing, I would look elsewhere. If all you want is the multi touch, this is a nice machine.
