Question about

Is there any reason to keep an AT&T unlimited data plan now?

I never go over 2 GB per month and AT&T seems to have placed so many asterisks that it's unclear why I'm paying the extra $60 a year. The only theory I have left is that faster data in the future will make extra data good to have. Unfortunately, there no way to know if AT&T will let you carry over the plan the same way they have blocked tethering and are penalizing the "top 5%".

I am in the same boat as you. I am currently grandfathered into the unlimited data plan, but rarely use more than 1 GB per month. I have often considered switching to the capped data plan to save a few dollars, and the only thing that has stopped me is "what if I use it one day" and "but I'll never be able to get it back."

I suppose both of those may not matter to you, but for me the cost of keeping the unlimited plan is only 5% of my annual cell phone bill, so I keep it for the "just in case" assurance.

I'm keeping mine as long as I can. AT&T scammed me one day, saying I used up 4GB in a day, which is ridiculous (no unusual activity on my phone's counter), but good thing I have unlimited. Imagine if I have the 2GB or lower tier, and imagine how much overages AT&T can scam on people.

Add on services like Google music, iCloud, siri, etc, it's very short sighted to think 2GB is enough, especially comparing to other countries where their cheapest plan already gives 10+GB with free tethering. We in the US are experiencing a dark age of technology, where we have super duper advance phone but highly bottlenecked data services.

I've been thinking the same thing as I am the same situation and never over 1 GB. I have kept mine out of spite for AT&T!! If I change plans I only save $5. Since I am always over the 200 MB I can't cut my data in half and pay $15. This means the only option is to save $5. Why should I have to make the effort when I don't like having a cap. Besides, it may be worth $5 / mo to not have to talk to an AT&T customer 'service' person.

I finally let my unlimited plan go. I really had to go out of my way to use large amounts of data on my cell. Most of my data needs are easily handled via syncing the data I want with my cell phone at the house. I tethered my phone to my iPad on maybe two occasions just because I could and not because I needed to. I am actually trying to live without a data plan for now to see how it goes. So far so good since I mostly just need to text now and then.

I've kept mine mainly to use the phone as a modem with a jailbroken iphone even though they've started to crack down on it. Since I don't use too much data on a regular basis, I'd have a large amount of leeway (1-1.5 gb) before I come close to the 2 GB cap.

Hopefully the main reason they're looking at modem usage on the iphone is by data usage and not another tactic, so it would take a LOT of tethering until they were tipped off I was actually using the phone as a modem.

Usage cap or no usage cap, 'carrier approved' tethering costs more so I'll stick with unlimited until I get a warning email.
