Thank you for the link. I already have the Twitter app.

Perhaps I'm missing how to tweak the app to do this, but when I click on a link in a tweet it doesn't open it like it does on iPad where the content displays along side of the tweet stream. When I click on a link now it opens that link in a Safari window and when I click the Safari window it comes to the front and blocks the rest of the Twitter app. I've tried resizing the Safari window that the link opens in but then the problem is all Safari windows open at that size. Also, if I open a link in a tweet and then close the Safari window that it opened in, then it displays the next Safari window, instead of taking me back to the Twitter app.

Since two people have answered that the Twitter app does what I outlined in my question, I fear I must be missing some obvious step, however I can't figure out what that is.

I don't think there's an app that fulfills that specific criteria because, for the most part, people know that multitasking (aka app switching) on PC is easier than it is on a mobile device, so it's worth the time trade-off to have the link open in your native browser rather than some generic browser built in to the twitter app.

The Mac twitter app is quite different to the iPad version. On the iPad due to their lack of multitasking and single pane view they have been forced to think outside the box and provide a solution for viewing links in one place. On a Mac you have the luxury of being able to run Twitter as a background app and dip in and out, then view links in a "proper" browser.
