Question about

is there a good way of knowing if my sound problem is hardware or software

have a mbp from around jan 2008, all of a sudden the headphone jack is no longer working! I do not see any red light there or so and I have tried to reset according some discussions. Is there a way of testing the jack? I now after the problem occured tried to install snow leopard but there was no difference. Speakers works just fine.

I'm assuming you've tried different headphones same computer/same headphones different computer. If you have boot camp with Windows installed, try booting into Windows and then check and see if the jack works. On a Windows PC you could download a Linux Live CD and boot from cd to test the hardware. I'm not sure if you would have driver issues if you tried this on a mac. If your hardware works under a different OS then you know there is a software issue somewhere.

You should boot up in safe mode and see if you still have the problem. Safe boot by turning off computer, and power up while holding down shift key until it finishes booting up. then check the sound settings in preferences. if the jack works then a new os install might be required.
