Is there a gesture for middle clicking on this, or the current laptop trackpads? It makes me sad not to be able to open a tab in the background...

Unfortunately in this regard, it's exactly like current trackpads. I find myself using a third party solution so that both my mouse and trackpad register a three fingered click as a middle click.
