Question about
Is the Vostro V13 ok for light gaming and website productivity?
Im looking at picking up the Core 2 Duo vairant of the v13 and im wondering if it will be ok for say light photoshop and and the occasional marathon session of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3? My current Acer only has a 1.3 ulv processor so this has got to be better then that right?

That model is not that much better than your Acer. Are we talking the full version of photoshop or photoshop elements? I assume that you will be using an external monitor for photoshop work as 13" and 14" screens are awful small . . . but then you already know that I suppose. Also, I would check to confirm that RCT3 runs on Windows 7, particularly the 64-bit version as that is pretty standard now on business notebooks.
In general, I would look for a second gen Core i3 (Sandy Bridge) notebook. The 2GHz speeds will give you a nice bump in performance, and I would opt for at least 3GB of RAM; budget permitting of course.

I'd forgotten all about compatibility in 64 Bit Windows. Good call. It's going to be the full version of Photoshop, which runs fine on my single core 1.3 processor currently, but it's not exactly burning down any houses or anything. Currently my Acer is hitting a 2.9 on the Windows Experience Index, by picking up the Vostro v13 and adding an SSD im hoping to hit maybe a 4.

It'll be OK, but RCT3 might lag once there are a lot of people in your park. Photoshop will run perfectly fine though, but you might have to be a little patient if you're working with large files.

I went ahead with the Vostro 13, with a Core 2 Duo processor and two gigs of ram with a Samsung SSD. So far you were right on. The computer itselfs seem to bloew anything else i've had out of the water. While I think i've managed to create a near Macbook experience, there are some pitfalls. For starters the computer's graphics subsystems mean it hits about a 3.2 on the Windows Experience Index score for graphics, and 3D. A little lower then I hoped but still not bad for my needs. The other thing seems to be a wierd issue with drivers. While every component in the system is capable of running 64 bit Windows Dell, made has only introduced 32 Bit Windows 7 drivers. For the most part everything seems to work but the touchpad which jumps around when you install the 32 bit version of it's drivers. Im still working on a way to fix that but I gotta say, so far, so good.
