Is Microsoft working on solving the issue of Kinect not seeing dark skin Users?

I'm kinda doubtful that Microsoft is looking to fix this issue by either software updates or a hardware upgrade. Whenever it's brought up, Microsoft just says that the Kinect is playable by anyone, no matter the race, and suggests that you should try to change the lighting in the room.

On a more technical/scientific stand-point on why this seems to happen, you have to understand how the Kinect sensor works. Basically, the sensor projects an infrared light grid of dots into the room. Those invisible dots of light are then reflected off anything in front of it, which is then picked up by the sensor. That's how Kinect is able to see what's in front of it, like a person, and lets you play games without a controller.
Again, the IR dots have to reflect off the surface of whatever's in front of the sensor for it to know that something is there and how far it is from the sensor. However, as most people know: The color black and other darker colors absorb light rather than reflect it. So if there is something in front of the sensor that has a really dark color, Kinect will just likely see an empty void where that color is.
This is why darker-skinned people and those who wear dark clothing may experience trouble while playing Kinect. For me, I know that Kinect tends to cut off the top of my head strangely due to my black hair.

But, will Microsoft somehow fix this problem? Again, I'm a little hesitant to say that they would seeing how they're just dismissing the issue. However, there's been coming-and-going rumors about a new and improved Kinect sensor coming that includes better tech built in. That's somewhat true: Microsoft will introduce a newer version of the hardware for their "Kinect for Windows" initiative, which will allow users/developers to use the sensor closer than usual (generally, you want to be standing away from it about 6-8 feet), among other features.
Still, Microsoft could possibly announce a newer, overall improved Kinect for Xbox 360/PC in the future: We got CES coming up, GDC, E3, and many other events happening this year and the next, and I'm sure MS is constantly looking to really make their Kinect technology better.

In the mean time, those having issues with the sensor recognizing you may want to try changing the lighting in your room and/or make sure you're wearing lighter-colored clothing.

Hope that helps!

Tips for giving the best answers

Sometimes it's just little details that separates a great and not so great answer! Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind:

1
Be complete and thorough. Don't skimp on the details!
2
Try not to answer with a question. Because that's not really an answer, right?
3
A little research goes a long way. Back up your claims and assumptions!
4
Try to be patient, tech questions can be complicated.
