Question about
Is it worth uprgrading processors in the macbook pro?
I have a macbook pro from 2009 with a 2.53 core 2 duo processor. It is crazy fast because I have 8gb of ram in it and a 120 gb ssd. It beats all the newest late 2011 thunderbolt macbook airs in the shop on boot up speed even though they also use flash storage. My question is that is it worth getting a new macbook pro with an i7 processor and put my 8gb ram in and my ssd or will there not be a big difference?
xbench score is 139.76 if anyone has an 8gb i7 ssd macbook pro can you please post your result.

Just wanted to point out that boot up time represents disk access speed, not processor speed. Also your ram will not work in the new MacBook pros as your 2009 model uses 1066 MHz and the new ones use 1333 MHz.
You should upgrade if you need that extra power. For example if you do photo processing with RAW files, or do video editing. Otherwise don't buy a $2000 Facebook machine.

I agree with either on this one if the machine you have now is doing everything you want it to do fast enough don't replace it. but if you are doing some heavy crunching like video then that is where the i7 will show its muscles. on day to day surfing the web reading e-mails and basic office productivity the Core 2 Duo is fine especially since you have the SSD and the 8GB of ram.
Now if you just want to buy a new one to have a new one wait for the next refresh then buy it then at least that way you will have the latest and greatest till the next refresh. :)

the sandy bridge processors are audio/video encoding monsters so you need more power to do that, I agree with the two responses above. Also, the only thunderbolt macs that come standard with an SSD are the mac book airs and if you are using an ssd mac, the startup time should be somewhat comparable. How often do you really restart your mac anyway? I restart min once a week max. You may also want to wait for the new IVY bridge processor macbooks to be released in April (so I've heard).
