Question about
Is it worth buying a laptop with a Core 2 Duo Processor?
My sister is going to college next year and her school is offering some good deals on Dell laptops with a Core 2 Duo (such as the Latitude 13 for $500 w/ 4 year service) . My desktop from 5 years ago has that processor, so I was wondering if it's stupid to buy a new machine with such an old processor or if for a kid who does email, word processing, and Facebook would be fine for four years with it.
Thanks for the help!

Not really, it's two generations old.
I would suggest getting a first-gen i5 or something, they cost around the same.
I use a 1 year old Core-2 duo macbook and it's slowww as hell.

For the tasks you mention, a Core 2 Duo is more than enough. My work laptop has the same processor and it's works fine for me. I've several instances of Visual Studio 2010 open, Microsoft Word, Google Chrome (among other programs) and I've no problems.
If a i5 or i7 would be better? Of course it would, but maybe isn't necessary.

Thanks for the answers - I guess it's a bit subjective. With price being a key factor and her usage being very basic, it's either find a great deal on the newer machines, or go C2D, throw in some extra RAM and call it a day.

What there offering might be worth it if the 4-year service includes accidental damage. College students + laptops = bumps, dings, drops, spills and falls. Nothing worse than being in school and having a laptop you can't use cause you dropped it down some stairs.

It all depends. My Lenovo T400 is already 2 years old, but I've found few machines to be as competitive as mine. My processor is an Intel T9600, thats a C2D clocked at 2,8Ghz with 6MB of L@ cache.
