Question about
Is it possible to install Leopard or Snow Leopard (or even Ubuntu) on an original Apple TV?
I've had an original Apple TV just sitting in a box for ages now. It's not really useful for anything, considering the Apple TV software it runs is old and won't be updated. It's almost not even worth it to recycle -- I think Gazelle will give me a total of $35 for it!
So, I've been looking at Mac minis to run as cheap server at home. Would the original Apple TV possibly fit that bill? Is possible to jailbreak and hack it so that I could run it as a headless server at home?

Here's a guide to jailbreaking your original Apple TV: appletvblogr.com/2010/12/how-to-jailbreak-apple-tv...
On another note, I was able to find a video that teaches you how to run Leopard on your original Apple TV through a USB Thumb Drive, it's dated 2009, but I don't know why it wouldn't work now: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PahtXXL5beY&feature=re...
The latter is probably what you need, the former is just for geek perusal.

I'm not sure as to loading a full blown OS, but I know for a fact you can load Boxee software on it.
Boxee is definitely my favorite tv box out there; and I don't even own the Boxee Box (I have a Windows PC dedicated to boxee with a 1TB HDD, and another one [a much crappier Pentium4 pc] with Boxee also. The latter one has access to the 1TB HDD via wifi).
So, Boxee is the way to go, I'd say. Specially if you're looking for some kind of an upgrade. Plus, old AppleTVs DO have a hard drive on em, right?
Good luck man!
