The only way to get the HD recordings off is via the component out. Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR will let you record any output this way. Although depending on your TV provider a late model TiVo may be a better investment since it has the capability to transfer your recordings over the network.

Does the DVR have a "record to VCR" option in the menu? If you can't lift the files directly, you could always do video capture on your computer with the composite or component ports.

And THIS is why cableco DVR's suck.... also because of the terrible UI and that they charge you $10 a month for the dubious privilege of having it.
I had an 8300 when I was with Cox and downgraded to a 4250 non-dvr when I got a Hauppauge HD-PVR and went the whole HTPC route. Once you get it set up the whole 4250/hdpvr/ir blaster/pvr software combo works like a charm and liberates you from the horror that is the cable company DVR.
