Is it only a matter of time before Sony PS3 uses Chrome OS or Google TV as a UI instead of XMB?

With so many gadgets to navigate. I think it would make a lot of sense for Sony to just adopt Google TV on the PS3. PSN should become an app for all platforms (apple WP7 etc). Sony Ericsson phones with the PSN app can have exclusive features. No?

Eh, I don't think so. The Google TV interface is pretty convoluted and confusing in my opinion. The PS3 XMB is much simpler and prettier. Plus, there's the issue that Sony likes to do things their own proprietary way.

All that said, I'm not sure Chrome OS would even be pleasant to use when navigating the file system of your PS3. (Just look at how annoying managing the file system in Chrome OS's tabs was during their demonstration at Google I/O).

PSN would be pretty neat to have available on more platforms, but I think Sony likes leveraging the raw power of the PS3. It'd be impossible to get Battlefield 3 running on my iPad the same way it will run on a PS3.

Extremely unlikely. Sony uses the XMB UI on dozens of gadgets - even some of its digital cameras - and the Google TV UI is completely inappropriate for those. Besides, the UI is one of the key ways a company brands its products and its user experience; Sony does not want to give that up to Google. Even if Sony wanted to do it, they wouldn't commit to it now; the current Google TV got enough negative feedback that Google is simplifying it as it moves to Android 3.x.

The Chrome OS UI would be even worse - it was designed for PCs, not a TV or set top box. Would you seriously use a tabbed browser for watching TV from your couch? That would force every remote to include a trackpad and awkwardness and no no no no. :)

Have to politely disagree. XMB is not a selling point. The more literate people become with complex interfaces (using touch and body movements) the harder it will be to keep people interested in XMB. Enter Google. If Google TV/ Chrome OS/ Android become one consistent user experience (ie Icecream), then Sony can also make/sell hardware similar to Apple and Microsoft. The only company that has a consistent experience on all of their products is Microsoft and Apple... to bad the experience is very limited compared to Google.

I am simply saying that branded software should go with branded hardware. Sony PS3 markets games and bluray and an unknown UI. Add Android to the unknown UI part of the equation and we have a winner.
