for gaming go with the PC. you get more flexibility with it. you can upgrade the video board, found card, hell depending on your mother board you may even get away with processor upgrade down the road. Yes you can upgrade a Mac Pro to some degree but not as much as custom built PC.
Now i like it seems a few folks here use both Windows and MAC i prefer MAC hand down and i think a MAC is better buy in the long run as ajcohen pointed out. But you stated you wanted a gaming rig because you design and occasionally play games. for that reason i would suggest a PC as it will give you more flexibility than a mac will on a budget.

For the money, a Mac will cost you more (for what on paper seems like less) at the tiem you buy it, but the stability of OSX and the longevity of their systems will make you come out on top over time.
In simpler terms, a Mac will run just as good as it did when you got it for way longer than a PC will. By the time you would need to replace a Mac, you will have gone through at least 2 PCs.
I know people still running iBook G4s from 2005, and they're just now starting to think of upgrading, and that's only because PowerPC Macs aren't supported by new software.

I use both - prefer OSX for everything, except gaming, which is only reason I keep both platforms...
Steam games are slowwwww on my Core i5 iMac and selection isn't great. I did Boot Camp the machine and have an XP install, which is ok for Windows games, but the Magic Mouse and keyboard aren't optimal.
If hard-core gaming is a primary use, I would purchase a PC and not a Mac. For anything else, I would purchase a Mac.

I have used both mac and pc for both. I must say that gaming on my macbook pro is a bad experience. it gets way too hot and doesn't handle valve/steam games very well. It is also not so compatible with a lot of games either. however, I must say that running the adobe master collection on my mac has been 10x more efficient than windows and an overall better experience.
A PC would definitely be more powerful at the same price and one with a good graphics card would be able to handle games pretty well
If you're buying a laptop, I would go mac... they're built better and last longer. I would have fried a windows laptop by now doing everything I do. OS X is more stable and secure
