iPod Nano dies on me every time I fill it up with music

I bought it second hand, more for spare parts, than for anything else. Its screen is broken and damaged (as if somebody put out a cigarette on the display...there is that dead spot), but it works. I mean..it worked. I started filling it up with the music and all of a sudden iTunes complained about improper disconnection of iPod Nano. Then Mac Pro detected an iPod in DFU mode, iTunes offered to restore it. Which I did, but iTunes reported some nonsense errror message about servers refusing to give info on updates (because my version was not supported), so I gave it up.

Later that day I tried switching iPod on and it turned on indeed, asking me to set up a language and then iTunes restored it normally. Then I put some music on it and let it rest on my desk. Today I put some more music in it and again iTunes complained about improper disconnection of iPod, and again I ended with a dead iPod which will probably come into life at some point.

What I'd like to know, as I already ordered the replacement screen, what if that error is not caused by the broken/defective screen? Could the iPod's memory chip be corrupted so that it breaks every time I fill it up up toa certain level with music?
