iPhone 3GS won't boot past Apple logo
So last night I was charging my iPhone 3GS via USB connected to my desktop PC. I was reading a book, and suddenly heard that noise that Windows makes when you disconnect a USB drive. I was curious what could have caused that noise, so I went over and saw that my iPhone had rebooted. However, it was stuck on the boot screen with the white Apple logo. I let it go for awhile (about 20 minutes), and nothing happened, so I hard reset it by holding the power/sleep button and the home button simultaneously. I then tried to boot it multiple times, but it never gets past the Apple logo.
I've searched for answers and have tried everything I've found, including holding the home button while plugging in via USB to put the iPhone into "restore" mode, but it just doesn't go into restore mode, and iTunes does not recognize it one way or the other.
Does anyone have any other suggestions I should try before I schedule an appointment at the Apple store?
PS: This phone has never been jailbroken or modded in any way. It was running 3.1 with the latest AT&T carrier version (i.e. MMS).

So for what it's worth, here's what ended up happening:
I made an appointment at the Apple Store and took my iPhone in. They took a quick look at it, and initially thought it wasn't working because the ports were dirty (i.e. the dock connector and the 3.5mm headset jack). This seemed ridiculous to me, but I let them clean it anyway, and they tried hooking it up to one of their MacBook Pros, but it still didn't work. Then, the guy at the Genius Bar plugged it in to one of their MacBook Pros and held the Home button while plugging it into the USB port. I SWEAR I had tried this exact same thing multiple times the night before to no avail. However, when I tried, I was holding the home button down for between 5 and 20 seconds. The guy at the Genius Bar held it down for a minute and a half and it finally went into restore mode.
I don't know what would cause the phone to require a 90 second hold of the Home button, but apparently it worked. I took the phone home and restored a backup and now all is good so far.
Hopefully this will help the others that have posted similar problems.

Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that it’s in restore mode.
Alternative Method:
Step 1. Connect iPhone to USB then listen to the sound when it connect and disconnect.
