iPad 2 or 'new iPad'

Trying to decide between a refurbished iPad 2 for $349 or the new iPad for $499.

Are the improvements--retina display, quad-core graphics, etc. worth an extra $150?

I'm perfectly happy with a refurb iPad 2 and saved $$$ in my wallet.

That extra money gets your more than just the retina display. As someone who has owned the last two iPads and all iPhones minus the iPhone 3G, I would have skipped buying the NEW iPad if the only upgrade was the retina display.

I think the extra money is well spent because...
  • the camera has gone from a very poor 1 megapixel camera that shoots 720p video and cruddy photos to the 5 element lens from the iPhone 4s that shoots 5 megapixel photos and 1080p video. This is a considerable jump from the iPad 2.
  • The A5x processor is great for driving the graphics of the retina display, but overall it will improve how video intensive apps run and developers will likely come up with some great apps to push its limits in the next couple months. The iPad 2 will likely miss out on the full experience of those apps.
  • Voice dictation is now in the latest iPad. It is useful for emails, tweets, you name it. I wouldn't be surprised if Siri was added in the future via iOS 6.0. It would be likely that the latest iPads and up would be the models to get Siri.
  • If you plan to get an Apple TV (I highly recommend getting one to use Airplay to stream games, video or anything else to your TV from your iDevices) then you would want an iPad that can stream in the highest quality possible. Only the new iPad supports streaming at 1080p to the new Apple TV. Unfortunately I have the Apple TV 2 which only supports 720p and I just bought a new 1080p TV. Not a huge deal to me, but I use airplay enough to consider purchasing a new Apple TV in the future if I can sell my current one. Airplay is incredible and really the only reason I would recommend an Apple TV over a Roku or other set top box.
If you simply want a device that you can browse the web and don't care about shooting photos/video among the other things I mentioned then save your money for the next iPad or purchase an Apple TV with the extra $99.

I'd say it's worth paying for the new one, the retina screen should look awesome, the A5X chip should make it even faster, especially in graphics-intensive games and the new camera is much improved! In addition, Apple should provide software updates to the new model for an extra year, so you'll get an extra year's use out of it.

Better go for the new one...new software is going to come next month and you might not be able to run it on the old one...look at an ipad 1 with ISO 5 on it... is slow

I don't think I've ever seen so much added value for only $100. Get the 3rd gen.

if you can drop the extra $150 i would say go for the 3rd Gen. if you can't i would check out e-bay or even Best Buys outlet center and see if you can get a used iPad 2 for 349 or less that has more memory and possibly 3G.

Nobody else can answer for you what you value. However, the Retina Display is a Big Deal in the day-to-day usage of the device. If that's not enough to sell you on the difference, the performance might be — but you might want to wait until reviews and comparison videos come out to see how big a change in performance there is in the types of apps you use, since it might not be consistent across the board, with the quad-core graphics but still dual-core CPU, and Apple's usual lack of details about any other processor changes.

For how long you want to retain ipad ? and what is your purpose ?

1. If you won't be buying new ipad for at least next 3 years then i will suggest for the new ipad.

OR

2. If you want an ipad for watching movies or web browsing and not much of heavy graphic work or gaming.

OR

3. If you don't capture pictures or shoot much videos from ipad or you have iPhone 4 or 4S or any other mobile with good camera or you prefer to use digital camera. Then go for i pad 2.

Because the new ipad has same dual core processor and i think same amount of ram. Which is sufficient for every application or work you want to do unless above mentioned things.

I'd say the new display is worth the upgrade. I was amazed by it on the iPhone 4.

YES - the improvements are absolutely worth the $100 difference. My recommendation: check them out side-by-side in an Apple Store and make the right decision ;)

If you have the iPad 1 then you should upgrade to new ipad. I always pass one generation for buying. All apple products are state-of-the-art technology.
