Question about

In the past Apple upgrades really required fresh installs, is the upgrade now just as good?

Any performance issues on late 2011 Macbook Pro's?

I installed Lion in a 2011 iMac and had no issues installing the OS or once it was done. This was the upgrade path.

I also installed an SSD in my 15inch pro and that was clean install and there were no issues or problems there.

So i don't think you have to do a clean install, though some times going the clean install path gives you chance to clean up and start over on the machine.
