you are all onto the correct answer. Basically, eventually you will be charged. They scan the device you are using to confirm it's model every couple of weeks (and I forget the exact amount of time), but once they see you are infact using an iPhone they update your plan. You can actually get away with sending some data until that point.

Coincidentally I was trying to lower my monthly costs by purchasing a cheap GO Phone and hated it. So i opted to using my iPhone as a dumb phone with all services off because I hated the user interface of the basic phone and all my contacts were on my old iPhone. A couple weeks in and I decided to call to find out if I could get away with it and that is how I arrived at my information.

If you stick it in, you won't be able to use any data services until you specifically pay for data on that SIM card. So now, they won't charge you if you put it in, but you won't be able to use 3G with it until you pay for it.

Yes,, they will charge you extra, At&t can tell what phone your using. So if you put your sim in an iPhone they will know it. They will usually contact you about it, via text, and tell you it will require a data plan. Now this is not always the case, but from what I've seen, mostly they do. Then they will add the data plan to your service, by default they add the 2GB plan, which is a $25 a month extra charge.

It hasn't happened to me yet. I gave my mom my old iPhone 3G and set the cellular date to off and they have not charged me for a data plan yet on her phone. I do have unlimited messaging for families so that my work around.

Yes, This is why I jailbroke and went to T-Mobile. Even out of contract, all data usage turned off, AT&T would detect my iPhone add a data plan onto my account automatically. Now with the AT&T-mobile merger looks like I'll be screwed again.

Ok wait. So I understand that if they see you pulling 3G they will charge you. But my line has the data blocker, which means there's no data connection at all. So they won't see that I have an iPhone right? Or care, because I'm not using the data connection. I basically want my wife's line to be a texting phone with wifi. Which happens to have an apple logo on the back :o)
