If I buy an Apple TV now, will I regret it in 6 months?
Will something better from Apple come out between now and 6 months, set top box wise?

Who knows. The new Steve Jobs book refers to what sure sounds like a better Apple TV . . . which may actually be a TV. However, we know nothing of when such a device will actually show up. I would be tempted to wait and see what comes in the first half of 2012. But, $99 is really not that much money . . . and you could always use the device in another room should something better come out.

The existing Apple TV is a good value for $99, and it still will be if you end up deciding to buy a new Apple television set in the future. If you like to watch Netflix or stream your iTunes content to your home theater then it's really great. Even if an Apple television comes out it won't be for probably a year or more, minimum.

If you have apple devices around your home, then appletv makes sense. If not you could use many other products (zune/western digital live/boxee/etc) to get more features. Also many LCD TV's now have these features built in, so if you're doing that too, it might save you some pennies.

It's $99. Seriously how hard do you have to think about spending $99? If there's a new Apple TV 3 in the next six months that supports 1080p video would you freak out? Regret spending the $99? Or would you just toss out the Apple TV 2 and buy a new one if it seemed like a significant improvement?
Also, what do you want it for? iTunes movie rentals? Photo browsing? Music playback? AirPlay? The current model works fine for all those things. I think its an easy purchase decision but then I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't find any of those things that useful.

Probably not 6 months but maybe 7. There have been some rumors about a new TV 3 which would make sense to upgrade the processor and get it back to 1080 resolution. As with all things Apple you never really know when something will be released. I think the next version will be released around WWDC timeframe so next June. I am guessing that time as it would also be good to release the sdk for developers to create applications. With the leapfrogging of Apple and Google apps are the next step. Google is releasing (or has released recently) apps for the Google TV. So Apple is going to do it and do it better. That's why the latest updates have included new apps... they are working with key people to develop the guidelines for applications. Well... its just a guess anyway. :-)
