Question about

I was very annoyed at how long it took to get Android updates on my Sprint HTC Hero.

Does Samsung have something like HTC Sense that will also delay updates, or is the Android on it pretty much unchanged from Google?

Yeah the Epic 4G has TouchWiz. Which might delay updates.

Yea, essentially most of the top tier Android phone manufacturers have UI changes that they put on their phones.

HTC: Sense UI
Samsung: TouchWiz
Motorola: Blur (though Moto has been decreasing how "in your face" Blur has been; should Google's acquisition go through, it may even disappear)

This means that updates are always slower because of this. In the US, Samsung seems to be particularly notorious for slow updates. (The Epic 4G, which I have, is still officially on Froyo.) On the other hand, some people really like HTC's Sense UI.

To be fair (in a sense), the carriers also have to have their bloatware on the phones, which can contribute to the slowness of updates.

The Nexus line of devices (Nexus One, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus) all come with stock Android. Google (NOT the phone manufacturer) handles the software updates and the Nexus phones will be and are always the first to be updated. As an additional bonus, they also don't come with the carrier bloatware.
