Question about
I want to take "more macro" photos with my S5 -- I already use Super Macro mode quite a bit, but I'd like to get even smaller details.
I am not particularly well educated in optics, so I don't even know what kinds of equipment would let me do this. Does anyone here have recommendations on what equipment I should start with?

It looks like there are a number of "lens adapters" available for the Canon S5 that can potentially enhance the macro abilities of this camera.
Check out something like this from Amazon:

Unfortunately, I don't have any direct experience with it, but the teleconverter component seems to be getting some pretty good reviews for its macro abilities from users on Amazon: " So far, I have the tele converter (simply an incredible value. I reviewed it on Amazon today), and the close up adapter that allows you to do macro work at max telephoto lens settings."
