Unfortunately, you left off the decidedly better console - the Xbox 360. I may be a little biased, but I feel like the Xbox 360, in terms of consumer use, dwarfs the PS3 and the Wii. The former started out priced too highly, and as a result never really took off. The latter is a little gimmicky, and is hardly next-generation, but sold like hot cakes.

If you are limiting yourself to those two consoles, you're going to want the PlayStation 3, hands down. However, if you're willing to bring the Xbox 360 into the equation, you might be happier. The online experience is much better (general consensus, not my opinion) and while it doesn't have more exclusive games than the PlayStation, it just seems to play the games better. It's very difficult to describe, but it just feels like the Xbox is more popular.

At any rate, TL;DR - PS3 if you can only choose between those two. Xbox if you can include it as well.

Good luck!

The only reason that the wii should even be considered is if you have very young children. The wii lacks in graphics and sound (it is not even HD), but the fact that it is great for the family was the qualifying factor when we purchased one.

If children are not a factor, then the Xbox 306 I would say is the top box, with PS3 a close second.

PS3
It's really not even close. It's by far the best console out on the market. Consider that the US Air Force spent $600K buying PS3 to compute large sets of data since it's a very powerful box considering the price.
Unlike the Wii and Xbox 360, there's no hidden costs, like extra attachments for controllers, wifi enablers, bigger hard drives to buy, proprietary headsets, RRoD, paying to play online, buying battery packs for controllers, and you can use one PS2 controller if you buy a $5 adapter. You can use a simple USB cord to charge the controllers and you likely have a bunch just lying around!
Yes, the PS3 was $600 when it launched, but now it's $249 and you can use an old PS2 controller, just about any bluetooth headset and don't have to pay a cent to play games online. I installed a 500GB harddrive into my PS3 that I bought for $60 on ebay. My fat 80GB that I bought used and plays most PS2 games didn't need the bigger hard drive, but I didn't have to buy a proprietary drive from Microsoft like you would if you bought the $200 Slim Xbox 360. I store pictures, movies, music videos and some songs on my PS3. Everyone I know with an Xbox 360 has had at least 2 of them, if not 4 because of the dreaded Red Ring of Death.

The Wii doesn't do HD, so it really shouldn't even be an option. I may seem snooty, but the difference is big. The Wii also doesn't have the quality selection of games that the true next gen consoles (PS3 and Xbox360) have. Buying all the extra attachments, battery packs, peripherals, etc reveals all the hidden costs that come with buying a Wii.

Even if you don't own any blu rays, having a blu ray player with the PS3 is a big bonus. With RedBox, Qwikster(Netflix), Blockbuster, etc you can see just how awesome the graphics are at 1080p with a blu ray disc. All these consoles do Netflix so that's a wash, but the PS3 also does MLB.tv, NHL gamecenter, Vudu, Hulu+ and just recently NFL Sunday Ticket. If you like simplicity in your living room, the PS3 really does everything.

I have the controllers for the Move, it's PS3's version of the Wii and the motions are much more accurate than the Wii, but it's not a reason to buy the system unless you have kids or hate traditional-sit-on-couch-by-yourself-and-relax gaming. For a light or heavy work out, don't discount the Move games, I have the Sport Champions game and The Fight and both can get your blood going!

Lots of people may say Xbox 360 is better because that's what they have. They have had multiple Xboxes, pay for online gaming and all pretty much play the same game. If you want to be with your friends, just know you're making a decision based on your friends, not the reasonable choice based on the quality of the product. In my experience, people talk more about playing than they actually do. You will save money buying a PS3 and be able to use that money to buy more games instead of battery packs, headsets, Xbox live and a bigger hard drive, not to mention a new console if you buy a used one and you get the RRoD.

I play lots of different games, mostly by myself, but sometimes with other people and love my PS3. It's very flexible in that it can be used in so many different ways and It has everything the Xbox and Wii have, plus it plays blu rays.

I agree with everybody else in this thread, it really depends on what you want to do.

The way I look at it is Wii is a gimmick console. It doesn't do much, but what it does it does well. If you have small children or older parents who you like to entertain Wii is the way to go. But it has some huge downsides:
  1. Lack of Blu Ray support
  2. Lack of dvd support
  3. No HD Support
On the plus side it has much cheaper price tag.

For me it really depends on what kind of a gamer you are.

If you're in single player RPGs then get the PS3 for sure but if you have a party every weekend OR you are a very casual gamer then I suggest the Wii.

Also, don't forget that the PS3 is a much more powerful system than the Wii.

Since the PS3 is MUCH more powerful than the Wii and seeing as the Wii's successor has already been announced, obviously I'm going to have to say PS3. Better graphics, more processing power, you still get free online, PlayStation exclusives, etc.

Now on the technical side, if you even care, many users here have been recommending the Xbox 360 instead of these two options you've provided. Here's my response to that:

The Xbox 360 has arguably better looking graphics (than the PS3) most of the time* due to a slightly better GPU unit, but the PS3 has more processing power. I put the * because most people agree that PS3 exclusives (running at full 1080p HD) look better than anything they've ever seen before. However, most multiplatform games look better on the 360 compared to the PS3. They're subtle differences, but they're still there. The PS3 has much more technical options and settings, with room for plenty of tweaking if you're into six different audio channels and whatnot. They're also roughly the same price, with the PS3 going for $250 now and the Xbox going for $200 (4GB version, no Kinect) but just $50 more at $300 for either the 4GB+Kinect setup or the 250GB console. It's up to you though.

If you are a casual gamer, then the Wii works well. If you are more hard core, I like the Xbox. The Xbox with Kinect tries to be a bridge to the casual gamer. The combination has potential, but a ways to go in getting titles out. As a note: we have both consoles.

Ultimately, it depends on the games you want to play. Several classic gaming titles are only available on Nintendo (i.e. Mario, Metroid, Zelda). While the more FPS stuff is geared more toward PS3. Many people will say, as is evidenced here, that the hardware specs are the most important and what are dubbed "hardcore games," which most of the time just seems to mean rated M, graphics intensive, action-intensive...some combo of those qualities. I would argue that none of those attributes has anything to do w/ whether a game is fun to play or not, and if I'm not mistaken, fun is the purpose of gaming. I waited in the cold over-night to buy my Wii in 2006 and I continue to play it today. In order to figure out "Which is better?" you need to sit down and see where the games you want to play are available.

don't listen to those who say the x box is good value for money. That is complete rubbish. It MAY be cheaper than the ps3, but you have to pay for EVERYTHIING. Such as £40 a year to play online, you have to buy a wifi receiver otherwise you have to plug it straight into your wireless, and this is about £40 also. You also have to by rechargable batteries for it as the controlers come with normal, and they run out VERY quikely, so then you either have to buy a port, or a plug in charger and, from experiance, I would recomend a port and this can be another £30 to £40. also, these adverts say that you can buy an x box for just over a hundred pounds, well you can, but you'll only have enough memory for about 5 games, so you need at least 60 gig, but I'd recomend 120 gig. After all this, it's actually terrible value for money. I mean, isn't the connect £100 or somthing??? I'm not being funny, but that is stupid money.
Anyway, for your answer, it depends what type of gamer you are. If you like really good graphics and shooting things then go for the PS3, but if you prefer the more relaxing type of game, such as mario and animal crossing then I'd deffinatly go for the wii. However, if you want to buy a wii, I'd wait until the end of this year and get the wii u, as it's suposed to be just as powerful as the x box and PS3.
