I've never owned a smartphone. Which phone do you think it would be easiest for me to use for texting, or to check my facebook, twitter, etc. pages?
Apps is short for applications - they are pieces of software, like programs on your computer, that you can install on your phone to do various tasks. There are Twitter and Facebook apps that allow you to easily check your Facebook and Twitter, and for everything else there's a browser just like you have on your computer for browsing miscellaneous web pages.
Apple's messaging app is also quite robust, and it makes texting much easier than you might be used to on a non-smartphone - it puts the texts in a graphical conversation display (like instant messaging) which makes receiving multiple texts easier to manage.
The iPhone also has many accessibility settings for people with impaired senses that you may be able to take advantage of.
