I've gone through a couple of these mice. The point of failure is always the mouse ball.

Yeah, I always despised that little ball. It would always get dirty and become clogged and unresponsive. Really annoying!

I've been enjoying the Magic Mouse. For the most part, it works really well. I don't find all the crazy gestures to be very comfortable, but it's easy enough for me to scroll through pages and navigate back and forth through pages in my browser.

I on the other hand thought the ball was the single most usable part of any Apple mouse for a long time. I'd even taken to taping over the optical sensor, tacking it to the desk and using it as a left-hand controller on some of my setups. I frackin' love that ball, still do.

However in a single-controller setup, the mouse tracking itself is crud, as is usual for Apple.

I really don't know what people do (eat with their hands? wrestle in olive oil in their spare time? Or is it that the vast majority of users have never grown past student-grade personal hygeine?) but I've never, ever had to polish my balls.

I feel the same about the Magic Mouse. I find the basic operations very useful but the complex multi touch stuff just doesn't feel comfortable. However, I love the new look and I don't have any complaints about the ergonomics of the Magic Mouse as others do.

I loved the trackball from a usability standpoint (columns in the Finder comes to mind) but the Magic Mouse doesn't suffer from as many moving parts. I have two or three Mighty Mouse(s) sitting in my desk at home that all have unusable scroll balls.

And I shower daily. I swear. ;-)

It's the function more than the ergonomics that gets me. The tracking is atrocious as usual and the last thing you want to be doing is gesticulating with the mouse as you're moving it - I prefer my fingers to be constantly hovering over the two buttons. My typical stationary Apple setup these days is with a decent mouse (in most cases a Revo MX as they're still trucking along pretty well) and a Magic Trackpad on the left hand side.
