Question about

I recently got a used iPhone 2G off a friend. When I got it, I used the "Erase content & settings" feature or whatever it's called.

It went through its looooong progress bar thing, then rebooted. The Apple logo came up, then after a little bit, the progress ball (I don't know what else to call it, it's a little spokey wheel, lol) appeared directly the Apple logo. Didn't move AT ALL, just sat there. Frozen. I thought "hey, maybe it needs to think a while", so I let it sit while I made dinner. I came back, it was STILL THERE. I watched it more closely, and noticed it was "restarting itself" (screen going black and this whole frozen progress wheel thing) about every 10-15 minutes. It's been like that for over 12 hours now (overnight), and I think something's definitely wrong.

I've obviously been researching all over the internet, and I would do a hard reset (lock+home) if I could - the lock button doesn't seem to work. It definitely won't be covered under warranty, as a) it's a secondhand device, and b) it was jailbroken when I hit "erase all content & settings". I don't know if it being jailbroken has anything to do with my problem, but I have a hunch.

Is my iPhone completely bricked, or is there something I can do?! Thanks so much in advance. :)

Yes, it was being jailbroken that did this.

Fortunately, it is not bricked (it is nigh-impossible to brick an iPhone using conventional methods as far as I know). You will have to restore the iPhone via iTunes. The restored iPhone will indeed have all of the content and settings erased.

You may want to look into DFU Mode as that may expedite the process. It's only necessary if you can't restore the iPhone normally just via plugging it into iTunes.
