Question about

I'm in the market for a new Android Honeycomb tablet. It must be 10" and Honeycomb.

From everything I've read, it's nearly a dead on tie between the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and the Acer Iconia a500 tablets; both Tegra2, 1gb ram.

I'm having the hardest time deciding between the two. The clear winner appears to be Asus per the IPS screen. But the Iconia build quality seems better; I like the aluminum. I don't plan on using a keyboard dock. I like the Iconia's usb ports and standard round power connector. I'm just worried about the tft screen and non strong Gorilla Glass.

I'd love to hear your input and opinion vs the two new Honeycomb tablets.
Thanks!
Dan

I have a Viewsonic Gtab with a custom Rom and it is wonderful and similarly priced. Tegra2, 16gb internal with microsd slot, 512mb RAM, 1024x600 screeen and like 3650mah battery which still lasts me a whole day sleeping, and maybe a bit more now that I have a new custom ROM. Honeycomb should be ported to this tablet once the source is released, which, as it looks, might be a while but hey its like $350 (i got it for 300 on woot or id have gotten a honeycomb too). Its still good with a tablet oriented rom, so if you're ok with following XDa's instructions then you should be golden with this one. If you wanna PM me for instructions too that works.

In terms of major specs, they pretty much match each other -- dual core processor, 1GB of ram, 10.1" 1280x800 screen.

If the keyboard isn't your thing, I would go for the A500 because it's $450. I haven't heard about any official price announcement for the Transformer, but I wouldn't be surprised it costs more than the A500. Also, I think the A500 will be available before the Transformer. You can already pre-order at Best Buy: www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+Iconia+Tablet+/+NVIDIA...

So I wavered back and forth on this, but finally decided the Transformer was the smarter buy. The cheaper price, better screen and tougher glass are what did it for me, not to mention the keyboard.

So, I pre-ordered at 12:04am EST on release date 4/26 and just received my shiny new Asus Eee Pad Transformer (TF101) this afternoon! It is Absolutely a pleasure to use. It starts up so fast, is so much smoother and more fluid than many of the reviews lead you to believe. The apps work great, browsing is Awesome and email with both gmail and other mail accounts work just wonderfully. Of course the screen is just amazing. I haven't used it outside yet, so no word on the sunlight issue... but who uses a tablet outside anyway.

I did play around with the A500 in Bestbuy a few times, and it is definitely on par and a very good tablet. Two great choices for consumers, so to each their own. Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

The acer won't record in HD and won't charge over usb. The asus has a custom UI on top of it.

It does have gorilla glass, you can go to the gorilla glass web site to confirm this. The screen is very good as well. I was a bit worried myself as well but the screen is bright and very crisp. My only gripes seem to be more with the android os itself, since it's quite buggy. The gps on this device is very slow to get a lock but I've read most android tablets are this way. The battery is not as good as the ipad. I believe they have a android specific bug that causes a operation called cell standby to suck lots of extra juice. I've read online in the acer forums they are supposed to fix this with a patch later though. Hopefully it's in the 3.1 June update. The gps fix is supposed to be in there as well. Overall it's a solid option to the iPad. I love the USB and micro sd slot. The device supports a USB keyboard if you wanted to use one.

I absolutely love the Acer iconia tab a500, its a bit heavy but that's my only complaint. Its fast, has a working sd card and is getting 3.1 in early june. HD video recording is coming in the next rirmware update says Acer but lets be honest, who the hell is gonna record with something this big? I'd much rather use my g2x which does full 1080p and is small and compact.
My beef with the Asus is that it has a custom interface and honeycomb doesn't need it and I really really like that the Acer has a full USB which means when 3.1 hits in june my ps3 controller will work on it as will my camera.

ACER Iconia with Honeycomb 3.1 is a great device. The screen is great, very bright and crisp. Works with my bluetooth apple keyboard without fuss. USB host port is a life saver in so many situations, you can just plug in SD Card, camera, mouse or whatever and use it just like a PC. Mouse support is surprisingly very good. I use it from time to time when I'm creating documents.

I wish the speakers were a bit louder. Battery life is OK. Last me all day with pretty regular use at school and such.

Because of the USB port, I chose this over the Transformer. Also cheaper than the transformer.
