I am currently considering the Synology DS210+, DS410+ and the HP MediaSmart EX495. My friend can do some basic configuration but doesn't want to need to manage the server so I would like software/driver updates can be automatic. Sort of a set it and forget it device.
The NAS will be used to store important files so there needs to be a good level of security & replication. RAID is a plus but I'm willing to consider other stable technology. I am thinking of about 3TB to start (double amount of space needed today) and be able to upgrade in the future. He has a new Dell desktop and an Apple laptop. Automated backups from the computers is necessary. Being able to easily restore computers from a backup would be a plus. Or even be able to setup a new computer and have it re-imaged would be a bonus. Sharing/syncing files (word docs, music, etc) between computers is necessary.
It will also be used to store media (music, movies) and streamed to other devices in the house. He has Control4 and new Samsung & Sony TVs (with dlna).
Any advice on what NAS to purchase? Thoughts on what other devices he may need to make he needs work (media extenders)? Lastly, any suggestions on what hard drives work best in this kind of NAS setup?
Thank you in advance for all your advice.
Question about
I'm helping a friend upgrade their home office and I need some advice on what NAS to buy.
I just bought the Synology210j and it works great. If you go with this option, make sure to choose the right hard drive though! Check the online compatibility list of Synology to be sure! It certainly does everythiing you need to and more. The DC210+ version might not be big enough though. If you want to go beyond 4TB you will need one with more than just two bays! The DS410 might be the right one, maybe just somewhat overkill. What I would miss on the 410 model is the ability to plug in a USB stick and back it up directly on the device without a ocmputer... not a deal killer though.
It is extremely easy to set up and I can only recommend it!
