Question about
sandblade

I'm debating between the x120e and the up and coming x220 from Lenovo. Someone convince me one way or the other.

I have a Dell Mini 9 that I'll be upgrading. I figure either will be an improvement. The one thing I did like about the Mini 9 is that it was so cheap, I never worried about breaking or losing it. However I must admit I wish it had more horsepower.

The X220 is has a very high spectrum in terms of configurations - nearly all of them in my opinion will be greatly more capable than a X120e. As a laptop with a pretty awesome 12.5" IPS screen capable of getting up to an i7 for CPU choices, it is designed for ultra portable high performance. So, if you demand that kind of power while on the go, then that is something you should go for. However, if you are more of a casual, light work (Internet/email/facebook/youtube/etc), then the X120e should be more than capable of handling that kind of task. Another thing to bear in mind is that the X220 does not have any dedicated graphics options... whereas the X120e has dedicated Radeon 6310 graphics. How the Intel Integrated Graphics compares to the 6310, I don't particularly know, but I would make a safe gander that the Radeon graphics may be more capable. I have read that the new graphics in the Sandy Bridge 2nd-gen Core CPUs are more than capable of handling 1080p video, but beyond that I don't think they have much horsepower compared to the Radeon.

OK, well I have zero interest in the X120e. So get the X220 if you're me.

Get the x120e if you want something portable that will do the job when you need it without a serious investment. Get the x220e if you want it as your primary computer for not that much more.

I have the x120e just for remoting into my work pc while on the go so I didn't want to spend a ton and still able to upgrade the RAM and swap in an SSD. The x220 looks like great value at around the same weight but with a larger chassis and lots more expandability. What I really miss in the x120e that you get in the x220 is the display port, which lets you power a high resolution external monitor.

Look at the price point - x220 is about double the price of x120e (E350). Plus you're comparing apples to oranges.

I bought my x120e (E350) because I already have a large laptop for work and wanted something ultraportable that was more powerful than a typical netbook but yet affordable like a netbook.
