Question about
MikeyrInFL

I live in a semi-rural area in Central Florida. We were among the last areas to get 3G. We are with Sprint and I don't expect to see 4G in the next 2 years.

Are there any compelling reasons to get this phone under these circumstances?

Mikey, the EVO 3D is currently Sprint's flagship device in nearly every respect, so if you want this class of smartphone - dual core processor, huge qHD display - you can benefit from those aspects of it, even if you never light up on WiMAX - or never use 3D, for that matter. Is it the best value if you don't use 4G? That's a bit more difficult to answer. But waiting until your contract is actually up is always a good strategy (if you're the patient type) because the market evolves so quickly. In another month, Sprint may have a new flagship device. (I'm not breaking NDAs, just speaking generally.)

the 3D utilizes wifi to a greater extent than my EVO 4G did as well. I have a 20 Mbps connection at home and the Evo would top out at 10Mbps via Speedtest the 3D is able to pull in 15Mbps and you can really tell the diff. I am in a 4G area and fire it up only on rare occasions. This phone definitely has more to offer than 4G

the Evo 3D is one of the top of the line phones no matter the data speed. It has some of the best specs of any phone on the market today, not counting 3g or 4g speeds. If you are due for an upgrade and are sticking with Sprint then it is supposed to be a great phone, and if you are into 3D stuff even better.

You can use this map to check to see if you're covered. I also live in Central Florida, a little suburb called Winter Park and I don't have first hand experience with WiMax, but I do know that we get awesome H+ and Verizon LTE speeds. So I definitely recommend checking out that map and looking to see if your town is "in the blue".

Keep in mind that Sprint is no longer charging the 10$ monthly premium to 4g devices only; they've extended it to all their devices. So if you decide to stay with Sprint, you may be able to save some money on the initial handset price. But when it comes to your monthly statements, they will more than likely look exactly the same whether your phone is 4G or not.

Only have had mine for 1 day, but enjoying dual-core and hi-rez screen and HTC Sense 3.0. The phone UI operates extremely smoothly...no jitter and UI blocking. This all has nothing to do with 4G or 3D. Improvements in calendaring, UI integration and general usability due to Sense 3.0. And that's just using it for one day. I'm so happy I upgraded from HTC EVO 4G. Yeah, yeah about Samsung Galaxy S 2 coming soon, but last Samsung Epic 4G I got was not very smooth and crashed a lot. Same with my Samsung tablet...I value stability over S-AMOLED blah blah.
