I currently have an Android phone and listen to a lot of podcasts during my commute. My car is a 2006 model Kia with a basic OEM double DIN head unit that does CDs/AM/FM; I don't listen to CDs or the radio :-/ . It has no aux input and I've been using an FM transmitter with my phone for about a year. My current transmitter seems to be intermittently failing and I'm looking for a replacement solution.
The current transmitter I have is good enough, but the FM reception is expectedly shoddy. I was considering a portable speaker like the one tagged in this question. Bluetooth won't necessarily be an issue as I see that most of the units for sale also support 3.5mm stereo inputs. If the Bluetooth works well, then great!
I live in a low to middle income bracket neighborhood, so I don't want a shiny new double DIN head unit in my 6 year-old salvage titled car, if you know what I mean. I'd also prefer to carry a portable speaker with me than having to remember to remove the face of the head unit (I'm not even sure if double DIN units typically offer that feature).
So I'm asking: if you were in my position, what would you do? Get a head unit with Bluetooth/Aux input; Get a portable speaker?; or are there options that I'm missing?
Thanks in advance,
Jamie

I have a similar situation, I've got a pioneer head unit but it doesn't have any aux input. I mostly listen to podcasts on the road as well so I picked up a bluetooth speakerphone and that works pretty well. Phone pairs to it when I get near, and the speaker clips on the visor and I can play whatever audio i want to it. It also has an FM transmitter built in, so you can switch the audio to your radio too, although that can be finicky as you know. It's just a small single speaker, so obviously it's not very high fidelity, but for podcasts that's not much of a problem, and it's loud. It's pretty compact and discrete, if you're worried about theft.. easy to take with you out of the car, but probably won't attract attention if you leave it there. It's probably a better solution against something like the jambox or logitech, because it's made to clip inside your car and has the fm transmitter if you need it.
