This is a known issue with the Eris known as the silent call bug.

The only solution I've seen online is to install a custom ROM on your phone.
If you have insurance I'd take advantage of that.
Verizon doesn't sell the Eris anymore so they may push you towards a new phone.
Verizon has a great selection of phones right now like the HTC Rezound and Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I'm sure if you talked to somebody you could get an early upgrade. I've also heard that Verizon has a promotion going on where they give a $50 discount when you upgrade to a 4G device.
