Head over to XDA and take a look. You will want to look for anything that is a CM7 build which is at RC2, which means it's close to being official release. I can't guarantee you will never have to update but the updating process from rom version to another is incredibly simple. Simply just flash a zip file and you're done, MOST of the time you don't even need to do full wipes. The frequency of the updates depends on improvements that have been made. Typically you will come across issues with wifi, mms, gps, etc and as I said the update process is 2 minutes.

I believe the Evo is an official CM device which means it can pull the updates through CM settings/Rom Manager.

Thank you. I was looking at the CyanogenMod 7.0.0 RC2 from the Cyanogen website, but won't that just give me Sense 2.3? I really want stock android.

I'm 99% certain all CM builds are pure Android AOSP. Like I said, check the forums at XDA and for CM. I only have an Eris but every ROM built from CM source has been pure AOSP.

I can confirm there is NO SENSE on CM. :) Hooray, down with HTC crapware. Anyway, there are a few CM specific add-ons and settings, but they are merely minor enhancements to the stock android which you can disable at will. I tried 2.3 during the beta but had a lot of crashing and wifi issues, so I rolled back to CM 6, which is 2.2, and have been using that. I am waiting for CM 7 Final, but I may go ahead and try the RC2 one day if I get bored enough before Final is out.

I chickened out. :( I already have ADW EX (with gingerbread theme) and it works great. Mainly, I wanted the stock lockscreen. I tried the ones on the market, but they have a "5 second" delay process, which I don't like. Fortunately, stock android allows for a high level of customization. Maybe I'll try rooting when a final gingerbread rom is complete.

Try RC2, I've been running it since release and it's by far the best ROM I've tried. Fast, stable, and best of all pure Android. It finally has 4g which is the big reason I wanted to try it, and haven't swapped it for anything else since.
