Scientific Atlanta DVRs suck. I know that's a terrible answer, but it's true. In the 5 years (maybe more?) that I've had DVR service I've had at least 20 different boxes. They are notoriously buggy, and just really are terrible in general. Unfortunately, my cable company only offers this brand (I have an 8300HD), and you can only find a good one rarely.

They're just so lackluster that you can have the exact same brand box, but one will have way more storage than the other. Your only solution is to take it back to your cable company and get a new box. Not an elegant solution, but the only one that's ever worked for me.

NotHotWater is right on the money.

Otherwise, the other solution is to buy something like a Tivo or off contract Motorola box, or invest in an HTPC and some good DVR software.

Scientific Atlanta was bought by Cisco, but not before they earned a reputation as being problematic to say the least. My personal experience with the boxes was horrible, going through 4 in an 8-10 month period when we had Comcast. Even the technicians servicing it thought it was crap. But Comcast bought the now defunct Adelphia assets in my part of the country and wanted to use the acquired stock up before bringing in something new.

I am very clad to have cut the cable (pun intended) and haven't looked back.
