HP TouchPad Owners, Do you think you should have waited till the Amazon Kindle Fire was released?

I would just like to get the opinion of HP TouchPad Owners who went out and purchased a Touchpad during the firesale for $100-$150.

Do you wish you would have waited for the Amazon Kindle Fire to be released?

I just find it an intresting point to bring up. Yes the screen is smaller, but it has access to the Amazon cloud and a huge Android App store provided by Amazon.

On another note if Amazon releases a Kindle Fire 10" for possibly around $299 would you have wished you held out for that?

Just curious.

I'm not regretting it.
  • I got mine for $99 - that's half the price of the Kindle Fire.
  • I'm enjoying the webOS/preware community (still fairly active, they've reached 1000 apps now).
  • Like you said, Touchpad's got a bigger screen.
  • I love the screen gestures (you don't know how many times I've tried to close apps by swiping up on my android phone now, ugh!).
If the webOS community starts dying off I'll be wishing I had waited, but if that happens I feel like someone will have Honeycomb running on the Touchpad by then.

Also take into account if you're a big Amazon customer (music, ebooks, video), it's like Apple, if you've invested in the platform, your gonna get more out of owning that platform's tablet.

I don't wish I had waited for the Kindle Fire although I did end up waiting a long time for my Touchpad to arrive.

I finally got the Touchpad I ordered from HP Small Business last week and my first reaction was not that great. It is a bit sluggish out of the box especially for apps to load even after I updated to 3.04. I am much happier with it now after installing PreWare and the suggested patches and also UberKernal with the 1.5 GHz overclock. Now, it loads apps almost instantaneously and really flies.

The other issue I have is that I learned that it can't handle video files over 2GB and haven't found a decent solution to that yet. I tried KalemSoft video player but the playback was not as good as the iPad particularly the audio got out of sync with the video but there were other issues as well.

I mentioned in another reply that I have also noticed that certain websites don't get rendered as well on the Touchpad as the iPad particularly in portrait mode (fonts aren't as readable). I wonder if that has to do with the web browser user agent and if so if there is any way to change that on the Touchpad.

The Kindle Fire might be interesting although out of the gate there won't likely be that many tablet optimized apps for it other than those provided by Amazon. Initially, faster web browsing might be its killer feature. For twice the money and half the storage and smaller screen size, I think the Kindle Fire still needs to prove itself worthy although it is still a great deal at $199. Personally, I don't care about being able to buy media for the tablet from Amazon. On the Touchpad, you can actually watch Amazon video content through the web browser. I care most about tablet optimized apps and the iPad is still the winner but that may change given the Kindle Fire's popularity. I hope that Amazon can port Ice Cream Sandwich to the Kindle Fire to leverage rather than splinter the Android Dev community. Then again, I imagine that Ice Cream Sandwich will also be ported to the Touchpad and there is even talk of HP porting Windows 8 to the Touchpad.

No, the touchpad is reaally good. I really like WebOS, but it is not always as responsive as the iPad. But hey, for 99 bucks I got a ten inch web browser that supports flash, has a good Facebook app, does video calls, and integrates some services like photos. There are actually days that I purposely pick it up over my iPad.
