How is it that Ultrabooks and MacBook Airs are comparable in price, but MacBook Pros are still cost way more than other laptops?
The new ultrabooks that have been coming out have been comparable in price with MacBook Airs, but a MacBook Pro is still way more expensive than its Windows counterparts. Why is this?

I think it has a little to do with the timings of the launches. Your traditional PC laptop and the MacBook Pro were out at about the same time, with the Pro being a more "premium" system targeted at professionals. The MacBook Air came out as a niche product and later had a more accessible price of around $1000. PC manufacturers are now playing catch up to the $1000 "ultrabook/MacBook Air" and thus they are priced similarly, as they require a similar cost to manufacture.

A Macbook Pro is considered more of a desktop replacement than the ultrabook and macbook airs are. So they tend to have more features and higher specs. Quick examples are CD/DVD burner and ethernet port on the MacbookPro where the MBA doesn't have either.

I disagree with your premise. I do not feel that Macbook Pros are much more expensive for what you get as compared to a PC. If you only compare raw numbers, it is possible to find PCs for less than the equivalent Macbook Pro, but you are not taking into account the significantly better display, build quality, track pad, and more that you find in a Macbook Pro. I think the 13" Macbook Pro is not very expensive for what you get as compared to a similar 13" PC.

The ASUS U36sd is my favorite PC laptop right now, and I find it both superior and inferior to a 13" Macbook Pro. The U36sd is about $250 cheaper, and lighter, but I still think the Macbook Pro has advantages that justify the price.
