Question about
How durable is the My Passport Essential?
I want this drive because it's so simple and it's small. However, if the plastic body isn't durable then it won't work for me because I tend to travel with these drives, not to mention the beating they take in the studio/at home.
So yeah, how durable have you found it to be?

I have four or five of these drives in various colors and amounts storage space. I've traveled all over the world with them, tossing them in cramped suitcases, carry-ons, etc. I even have two in constant use on my home media server as well as Time Machine. Not once have I had so much as a hiccup from them. They're a very good bang for the buck.
That said: EVERY mechanical hard drive is a ticking time bomb and will inevitably fail, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt!

I picked up one of these to go with my Air (*sad*) and it's been great. It usually lives on my desk but I occasionally toss it in my bag and it still looks like new... I don't even use the carry case it comes with (cuz' I'm lazy).
My only complaint has been that the connection between the USB cable and the drive case is a bit iffy so if I move the drive while it's plugged in the drive disconnects and then reconnects.

I haven't had any issues with it so far, but I don't travel around with it too much. If you know you're going to be putting it through some abuse, I'd sacrifice the size and just go for a rugged drive. The My Passport Essential is definitely plastic-y with no shock absorption, so I can see this not ending well for your data if it took a hit or two.

i bought mine in August 2009 and has started to fail, sometimes it takes minutes to read/write files, sometimes it just disconnects and connects due to no apparent reasons, even when is not being demanded...i think I'm backing up my data and trying something more rugged before it fails completely... you all should do the same... :D

I have one of these and I'll echo cass statement. It's a fine drive if you don't have to worry too much about portability but the thing feels like it's just 4 pieces of plastic glued together.
