Vanilla Android
The short answer is you can't right now. Since this phone has a locked boot loader you have to run the Motorola Kernel. This means you can not run the google or custom kernels. You can still run Custom Roms but they all have the same basic Moto kernal but just less motorola blur.
Now the big exception to this is something called 2nd init. This is a process that basically runs an exploit against an older version of the phone software allowing it to hijack the kernel and then replace it with a more vanilla kernel such as Cyanogenmod. To learn more about the process read this cvpcs.org/blog/2011-06-14/2nd-init._what_it_is_and... Now Cyanogenmod is in progress for the DP but its still an early alpha. So until this is further developed your best bet is to stick with a Rom that is based on the Moto Kernel.

You'll probably have to dig through XDA forums. Looks like there's some development on getting CyanogenMod7 onto it.

Go with the below (I marked it as good). XDA is the best resource for rooting/jailbreaking info.
