how do i use my hero as modem for labtop
I don't know what version you are running, but I just plug it in with a USB cable and choose share internet. Probably needs to be supported by your carrier, here (Switzerland) they all allow it.

The best way is to root your phone then download wireless tether. It won't be a fast connection but it will get the small jobs done without having an extra tethering package added on.

If you are running Mac OS X then good luck, jailbreaking it is pretty much your only option. Only jailbroken there is a fantastic app called WiFi tether which does what it says on the tin!
If you are Windows then you'll need to download software from the HTC website (www.htc.com/us/support/hero-sprint/downloads/) which will allow you to tether via the USB cable.
